This manga is the telling of the dark story of Ken Kaneki, an average college student in Tokyo, a city where mysterious human-like creatures called ghouls survive by eating human flesh. Ghouls live in secret among humans and are indistinguishable except for their diet and special predatory organs. Kaneki, the first ever half human half ghoul hybrid, must quickly adapt to his new existence trapped between two worlds. Ghouls who run a coffee shop called Anteiku take him in, teaching him how to navigate ghoul society and control his new powers.

The story and art for the Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re manga series were both created by the Japanese manga artist Sui Ishida.

This series is heavily inspired by classical literature, most notably Franz Kafka's novella The Metamorphosis, which explores themes of alienation and physical transformation. Other referenced authors and works include Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, Hermann Hesse's Demian, and the works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. His style was also influenced by manga such as Hunter x Hunter and Attack on Titan.
