Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception for the PlayStation 4 is a rich and deeply absorbing hybrid of visual novel and tactical RPG — a slow-burn epic that earns its every dramatic payoff across 40 to 50 hours of story. In a world where humanity as we know it no longer exists, a man wakes up in a snowy forest with no memory of who he is. He is found by Kuon — a strikingly capable young woman with cat-like ears and a tail — who names him Haku and takes him on a journey toward the mighty nation of Yamato. What begins as a warm, often hilarious slice-of-life adventure gradually reveals political intrigue, ancient mysteries, and a darkness beneath the surface that the leisurely opening chapters conceal with remarkable patience.

The vast majority of the experience unfolds as a visual novel — fully voiced in Japanese, with gorgeous artwork and character portraits illustrating every scene. When combat does arrive, it takes the form of turn-based SRPG battles on isometric grids, with an Attack Chain system that rewards timing and coordination. Combat is engaging but infrequent — buyers who come expecting a primarily action-driven game should know this is first and foremost a reading experience. The story is told in its powerful original Japanese voice with English subtitles throughout.

Mask of Deception is the first part of a two-game story and directly sets up Mask of Truth. The two games were released simultaneously in North America. The franchise began as a PC visual novel in 2002 and has since spawned manga, anime, and multiple game adaptations.
