Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is a tactical RPG for the Nintendo DS developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix, released in North America on March 17, 2009. It is the third entry in the Valkyrie Profile series and a prequel to the original game, set in the same Norse-inspired world of gods, valkyries, and mortal warriors chosen to serve in Valhalla. The story centers on Wylfred, a young mercenary consumed by hatred for the Valkyrie Lenneth, whom he blames for taking his father as an einherjar and leaving his family to collapse in poverty. After Wylfred himself falls in battle, the goddess Hel resurrects him and places a cursed feather in his hands, giving him a weapon to use against the divine.

That weapon is the Destiny Plume, a feather imbued with dark power that temporarily transforms a party member into an unstoppable force in battle. The cost is absolute: any unit empowered by the Plume dies permanently when the battle ends. The frequency with which Wylfred chooses to use it determines the shape of the entire story. The game tracks a Sin meter across every battle, measuring how much Wylfred is willing to sacrifice others to pursue his revenge. Use the Plume often enough and the path leads toward confronting Lenneth directly, but at a personal cost that colors the ending. Refrain from using it entirely and a different antagonist emerges, one whose involvement is hidden behind Wylfred's singular obsession. The game has three distinct endings tied entirely to the player's choices around the Plume.

Battles play out on a grid with turn-based movement, but combat itself is real-time. Each party member is assigned to a face button, and attacks can be chained across the whole party in a single action sequence. Filling the Attack Gauge opens cinematic Soul Crush finisher attacks. An Overkill system allows attacks to continue after an enemy's health reaches zero, generating bonus rewards and feeding the Sin requirement for each battle. Falling short of the Sin threshold for a stage brings a powerful enemy into the next one.

The game includes New Game Plus and the Seraphic Gate, a secret postgame dungeon. Music is composed by Motoi Sakuraba. Nintendo DS cartridges are region-free and will play on any DS, DS Lite, DSi, or 3DS system. Authenticity has been verified.
