Viewpoint for the Sega Genesis is a port of Aicom and Sammy's 1992 Neo Geo arcade shoot-'em-up — one of the most visually striking games of its era and one of the rarest entries in the Genesis shoot-'em-up library. The game's 3D graphics were drawn entirely by hand, using 2D polygons rendered to give the illusion of a 3D isometric environment — a technical achievement that made the arcade version a showstopper in its day. Viewpoint was awarded both Best Graphics and Best Music in a Video Game in Electronic Gaming Monthly's 1992 awards, and the Neo Geo original scored 99% from GameFan reviewers who called it the best game on the system. The premise is minimal: players pilot the Byupo fighter through six stages of relentless combat across surreal, biomechanical environments teeming with eccentric enemy formations and multi-phase bosses — a pure arcade shooter experience built around the challenge of mastering its unusual perspective.

Viewpoint's isometric scrolling gameplay was largely inspired by Sega's classic arcade shooter Zaxxon, presenting the action from a diagonal overhead angle that gives the game its distinctive look and its central challenge. Players arm the Byupo with a rapid-fire cannon and a four-level charged Wave shot, collecting satellite options that mirror the ship's fire and absorb enemy bullets. Three types of bombs are available — blue shock wave, red fire wall, and green homing missiles — each with distinct tactical applications. The Genesis port faithfully reproduces the Neo Geo version's gameplay: enemy bullet spreads are just as demanding, enemy counts are close to the original, and the multi-form bosses are largely intact — though boss stamina is somewhat reduced compared to the arcade. The isometric perspective is the game's greatest visual asset and its greatest gameplay challenge simultaneously: lining up shots and reading bullet trajectories from the diagonal angle demands a different kind of spatial awareness than any other shooter on the Genesis.

Viewpoint was ported to the Sega Genesis in 1994 by Nexus Productions and published by Sammy — two years after the Neo Geo original. The Genesis version took a visual hit from the hardware gap, with duller colors, sprite flicker, and notable slowdown during intense sequences, but reviewers consistently praised how faithfully the port preserved the core gameplay experience despite the technical limitations. Electronic Gaming Monthly's five reviewers averaged 7 out of 10 for the Genesis version. The Genesis port was never released in Japan on cartridge, making it a Western-market exclusive. The game appeared on the Genesis Mini 2 microconsole in October 2022, and the arcade original was released on Nintendo Switch and PS4 via Hamster's Arcade Archives in August 2023 — but the original Genesis cartridge remains a genuinely scarce physical release and a prized find for collectors of Genesis shooters.
