Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense for the Nintendo 64 is the direct sequel to Vigilante 8 — and a genuine step up in almost every dimension. The story picks up after the Vigilantes' victory over the Coyotes, but the war isn't over: Slick Clyde has acquired time travel technology, giving the Coyotes one last chance to go back and change the outcome. The result is a 1970s vehicular war with a science fiction twist — and new power-ups that can temporarily transform your vehicle into a hovercraft, watercraft, or snowplow depending on the terrain.
The roster expands from 12 vehicles to 18 — including a Dakota Stunt Cycle, an Excelsior Stretch Limousine, and a prison bus — each with unique special weapons and handling. The eight Quest Mode stages span the entire United States: a California harbor, an Arizona meteor crater, the Utah Winter Games site, a Louisiana bayou, a Florida NASA launch facility, a Pennsylvania steel mill, a Minnesota nuclear plant, and the Alaskan Pipeline. Every environment is fully destructible, and each stage features unique environmental hazards — sharks in the harbor, crocodiles in the bayou, and a giant ant in Arizona. Vehicle upgrades scattered across levels improve armor, speed, acceleration, and targeting.
Four-player split-screen returns with three dedicated multiplayer modes: Brawl (pure free-for-all), Team (two vs. two), and Smear (one vs. three). Quest Mode supports two-player co-op. The game supports the Expansion Pak for high-resolution graphics, the Rumble Pak for force feedback, and the Controller Pak for save data. IGN called it an improvement over the original in nearly every way. A worthy sequel that rewards owners of the first game and stands on its own for newcomers.
Developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision, released for Nintendo 64 on February 1, 2000 — also available on PlayStation and Dreamcast, though only the N64 version includes all four-player modes and Expansion Pak support.
