Amid a rugged landscape, the military power of Paro has enjoyed peace for more than a hundred years, but now it is the lust for power of its monarch that will end this. He organises an invasion of the seaside kingdom of Itha to get his hands on its riches. For Paro’s prince Jill and Ahanas, the princess of Itha, a terrible time begins as the happiness of these two young lovers threatens to be crushed by a cruel and senseless war. Nevertheless, the two are unwilling to give up their hopes of a future together.

Between the two kingdoms lies the farming village of Saki, whose inhabitants are rightly worried about the impending conflict. Only a young inhabitant named Izu sees the war as an opportunity to achieve fame and honour for himself. When he meets Cail, the chief minister of Paro, one evening, the latter makes the young and ambitious man an offer: if Izu fights for their cause, he will be rewarded handsomely. While Izu sets off, his wife Marin simply hopes for his safe return home. However, it is not long before their village of Saki is drawn into the war, too …

Windaria is a dramatic fantasy tale filled with magic, war, romance, and sorrow—an emotional and beautifully animated story that stands as one of the great mid-80s anime fantasies.

Originally released by Harmony Gold in the U.S. under the alternate title Once Upon a Time, this tape uses the international cut with rewritten dialogue and tonal changes from the original Japanese release by Kadokawa.
