Windjammers is based on a real-life sport known as Saucer Tennis or Frisbee Tennis. Two players face off in an arena with a low net in the middle. Points are scored by throwing a disc into the goals behind a player or whenever the opponent is not able to catch the disc in time. There are two moves: a regular throw and a lob. By using quarter-circle movement, players can also add effect to the throw. To catch difficult discs, they can slide to reach them faster.
There are six characters to choose from, with specific abilities and their own court fit for their skills. A single game consists of short sets of 30 seconds (international version) or 45 seconds (Japanese version). The game is won after winning two sets or sudden death after two draws.
For the futuristic touch, signature moves are added. To charge the meter used for special moves, the player need to block, toss or lob the disc and then charge while the disc is in the air. These moves can be countered and sometimes they knock an opponent into the goal.
Two mini-games are included in-between levels: play fetch with a dog and Flying Disc Bowling.
