Ys Origin - PlayStation 4

Ys Origin for the PlayStation 4 is the console debut of Nihon Falcom's acclaimed 2006 action RPG prequel, ported by DotEmu and set 700 years before the events of the main Ys series. A devastating demonic invasion has forced the twin Goddesses of Ys to use their magic to lift the people and their temple into the sky. The demons respond by constructing a colossal tower to continue the assault from below. When the Goddesses mysteriously vanish inside Devil's Tower, a search party of knights and mages descends to find them. Two members of that party form the playable cast at the outset, with a third unlocked after completing both of their stories.

Yunica Tovah is a close-range axe-wielder who fights in the tradition of the series' usual protagonist Adol Christin, charging through enemies with speed and aggression. Hugo Fact is a ranged magic specialist who attacks with projectile bursts from his staff and a pair of orbiting satellite weapons called the Eyes of Fact, playing at a completely different rhythm and distance from Yunica. The third unlockable character brings yet another playstyle. All three share the same general path up the tower but experience different story scenes, pursue different goals, and require genuinely different approaches to the same enemies and bosses. Elemental artifacts are collected throughout the tower and serve as both combat tools and keys to environmental puzzles.

Boss encounters are the centerpiece of the experience. Each boss is a large multi-phase spectacle with distinct patterns that demand timing and pattern recognition, and the game's steep difficulty curve on higher settings is a significant part of the appeal for series fans. Three additional modes beyond the story campaign include Time Attack, Arena Mode, and unlockable appearances by Adol Christin in both his Ark of Napishtim and Oath in Felghana combat styles. Originally released in Japan in 2006 and localized for PC by XSEED Games in 2012, the PS4 version published by DotEmu in North America on February 21, 2017 was the first time the game appeared on a home console anywhere in the world.
