Ghost Talker's Daydream is a darkly comic supernatural horror manga from writer Saki Okuse and artist Sankichi Meguro. Meet Misaki Saiki — albino, dominatrix, virgin, and reluctant necromancer. By day (or night) she works at one of Tokyo's most exclusive S&M clubs and writes for an adult magazine. But her most unusual — and least favorite — job is working as an exorcist for the government's covert Livelihood Preservation Group, where she's paired with Souichiro Kadotake: a highly capable martial artist who is, inconveniently, absolutely terrified of ghosts. Together they navigate Tokyo's supernatural underbelly, helping restless spirits find peace and move on.
What sets Ghost Talker's Daydream apart from typical horror manga is its sharp, irreverent tone — equal parts creepy and genuinely funny — wrapped around a surprisingly layered portrait of social isolation and urban malaise in early 2000s Japan. Each case begins as a standalone mystery before threads slowly converge into something much darker, centered on an alarming spike of suicides across the city and a shadowy organization pulling strings from behind the scenes. Meguro's character art leans deceptively youthful and shonen-clean, which makes the horror land harder when it hits.
Fans of Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Twilight of the Dark Master, or MPD Psycho will find a lot to love here — a cult classic of early Dark Horse manga with adult sensibilities, genuine scares, and a lead character unlike anyone else in the genre. The series was also adapted into a four-episode OVA in 2004 — if you want to see Misaki in action, we also carry the Ghost Talker's Daydream OVA DVD and a Misaki Saiki figure in our store.
